Caravan-Theft Hotspots in the UK and How to Avoid Them
The Caravan Registry5 July 20264 min read

Caravan theft isn't random. It concentrates around insecure home storage, unmanned storage compounds, and the routes and regions where organised thieves operate. Knowing the pattern helps you store smarter and worry less.
The pattern
Vans are most often taken from driveways and unsecured yards, and thefts cluster in areas with easy motorway access for a quick getaway. Recovery sits at around one in five nationally.
Why these places
Two things drive it: vans left visible and hitch-ready (driveways, laybys, low-security compounds), and good escape routes. An unlocked van on a driveway near a main road is an easy, low-risk target.
How to lower your risk
- Use a CaSSOA-rated storage site with barriers and CCTV where you can
- At home, keep it out of sight and block it in; never leave it hitch-ready
- Fit a hitch lock and wheel clamp — visible deterrents work
- Keep CRiS current and register the van so a recovery can find its way home
Remember: you can't always control the area, but you can avoid being the easiest van in it — and make yours recoverable if it does go.
