Spotted a Stolen Caravan? Here's How to Help Safely

You're browsing a for-sale listing or driving past a storage yard and something looks off — a van priced suspiciously low, a vague seller, a CRiS number that's been scratched. Here's how to help without putting yourself at risk.

Golden rule

Don't confront anyone or try to recover a van yourself. Gather details and pass them to the police and the owner.

1. Check it against the records

If you can get the CRiS or chassis number, or a clear photo, search the Lost & Stolen board and consider a CRiS check. If it matches a stolen report, you've found a real lead.

2. Note the details

Screenshot the listing, note the location and time, the seller's details and the asking price, and any signs the numbers have been tampered with. Don't tip the seller off.

3. Report it

Pass everything to the police (and NaVCIS, the leisure-vehicle unit) and, where the alert allows, let the owner know. You provide the intelligence; the police act on it.
