You Found a Caravan or Piece of Kit — Here's What to Do

You've come across a caravan that seems abandoned, or a piece of kit — an awning, a mover, a gas bottle — that's clearly been dumped or offered for sale in dodgy circumstances. You'd happily reunite it with its owner. Here's the quick, safe way.

The short version: look for a tag and scan it; if there's none, note the CRiS/chassis number and check the register and the Lost & Stolen board.

1. Look for a QR or NFC tag

Many registered vans and items carry a small QR sticker or a hidden NFC tag. Point your camera at a QR code, or tap your phone to an NFC tag, and you'll land on the item's page with a way to reach the owner — privately, without seeing their details.

2. No tag? Find the numbers

Look for the CRiS number etched on the windows or a chassis number, and search the register. Cross-check the Lost & Stolen board — it may already be reported.

3. If it might be stolen

If you suspect a van or item is stolen, don't take it or confront anyone — note the details and tell the police (and NaVCIS for vans). A quick check on the register might be all it takes to get it home.

Thanks for doing the right thing

Check a found van or item against the register.
